How do I know if I need a patient advocate?

If you feel overwhelmed by medical decisions, are frustrated with the healthcare system, need help understanding your treatment options, or have a family member who needs a more constant hand involved with their care, I an am just what you are looking for.

Is a patient advocate the same as a nurse?

I’m not a medical care giver. I can help you find proper care but I am not permitted to perform medical duties.

Can a patient advocate make medical decisions for me?

I can't make medical decisions for you, but I can ensure you have all the information you need to make informed choices. I can communicate on your behalf with your healthcare team. They have various reasons for doing what they do. My sole reason is your wishes, first and foremost.

Will my insurance cover the cost of a patient advocate?

If you hire me, an independent patient advocate, I work directly for you. Sadly, insurance will not cover the costs.

Why is a private patient advocate better than a hospital patient advocate?

In hospitals, advocates are hired to make sure patients are happy enough not to sue the hospital. These advocates do satisfy patient complaints but their primary loyalty is to the hospital. As an independent patient advocate, I work for you. My loyalty is to you.

If my parent lives in another part of the country, can an advocate help me stay informed and involved in their health care?

Many older adults don’t live near their children. More and more, these people hire private patient advocates to help navigate their care while keeping their families in the loop. From making appointments, going to the doctor with them, and following up with the necessary parties, I can keep families comfortable with their loved one’s care.

I never remember what the doctor tells me at my appointments. Can a patient advocate go with me and listen to what the doctor says?

Yes. One of the most important things I can do as an advocate is to be another set of eyes and ears at your medical appointments, whether in person or online. Afterwards, we will discuss the visit with you (and perhaps your family) so that everyone is on board and knows the next steps.

Can a patient advocate take me to my doctor’s appointment?

I will meet you are your medical facility. However, I can arrange your transportation to any appointment.
